What to know: If Iowa is to get itself under consideration for the NCAA tournament, it needs to have some road successes. Four of its next six contests are away from home.
The Hawkeyes are coming off a 69-67 home loss to Maryland Wednesday. Michigan got walloped 99-67 at No. 2 Purdue Tuesday, its seventh loss in its last eight games.
“It’s a disappointing loss on all levels,” Wolverines Coach Juwan Howard said.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do.”
Michigan beat Iowa 90-80 in Iowa City on Dec. 10. The Wolverines led by as much as 20 points. They out-rebounded the Hawkeyes, 41-32.
Michigan guard Dug McDaniel had 15 points and seven assists in that game. McDaniel is only playing home games now, having been suspended for road contests for academic reasons.
Iowa senior guard Tony Perkins scored 44 points over the last two games. He made all 11 of his free throws against Maryland. In Big Ten play, Perkins is seventh in the league in scoring, eighth in assists, and sixth in steals.
Michigan is in danger of its first losing season since 2009-10. It hasn’t had a losing Big Ten season since 2014-15. Iowa hasn’t had a losing Big Ten season since 2017-18.
Hawkeyes Coach Fran McCaffery said Friday that freshman forward Ladji Dembele practiced Thursday, and “we feel good about him” playing at Michigan. Dembele missed Wednesday’s game with an ankle issue. He averaged 5.5 rebounds off the bench over his previous two games.
