What to know: While Iowa was idle during Thanksgiving and the weekend, Northwestern played a pair of games in Tempe, Ariz., Thursday and Friday. The Wildcats lost 71-69 to Butler, then snapped back to defeat UNLV, 66-61, behind 23 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists from senior guard Brooks Barnhizer.

Barnhizer was a preseason All-Big Ten honoree and was on the league’s All-Defensive team last season. He missed the season’s first four games while still recovering from a summer foot injury, but has averaged 20 points in the four games he has played. He played 77 minutes in Tempe.

Wildcat junior forward Nick Martinelli and Barnhizer rank third and fourth in the Big Ten in scoring. Martinelli averages 20.3 points. Junior guard Jalen Leach, a transfer from Fairfield, averages 14.8.

Northwestern’s great guard, Boo Buie, used up his eligiblity and now is on a two-way contract with the New York Knicks.

“He might have had the best year of anybody in college basketball last year,” Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery said.

“But you really saw Barnhizer and Martinelli, in particular, take that next step to where they becme elite guys in the league.”

The Wildcats have held opponents to 62.5 points per game and 41.5 percent from the field.

Iowa has won 12 of its last 14 games against Northwestern, and nine straight at home dating to 2012.

Hawkeye sophomore guard Brock Harding topped his career-high in scoring the last two games, getting 19 points against Utah State and 20 against USC Upstate. He had 10 assists against the latter and is tied for fourth in the Big Ten with 6.0 per game.
