What to know: On Tuesday, Iowa became the first Big Ten team to move to 3-0 in league play. Caitlin Clark’s 3-pointer at the horn beat Michigan State, 76-73.
Also on Tuesday, Rutgers became the first Big Ten team to move to 0-3 in league play. The Scarlet Knights missed a shot at the buzzer and lost at Purdue, 77-76, for their fifth consecutive setback.
Clark upped her season average to 31.5 ppg with her 40-point performance Tuesday. Her career total is 3,189 points, which is 338 points away from the Kelsey Plum’s NCAA Division-I record of 3,527. At her current pace, Clark will catch Plum at home against Michigan on Feb. 15.
The Hawkeyes are 11-1 vs. Rutgers since the Scarlet Knights joined the Big Ten, including a 111-57 rout last season at Iowa City.
Iowa has a NET ranking of 7; Rutgers is at 150.
Rutgers is 6-4 at Jersey Mike’s Arena this season, 0-6 elsewhere.
Kaylene Smikle, a 6-foot sophomore guard, leads the Scarlet Knights at 16.1 points per game.
The road trip from Iowa City to Piscataway is 995 miles, longest in the Big Ten. Next year, it will be the fifth-longest trip behind Eugene (Oregon), 1,925 miles; Seattle (Washington), 1,850; and Los Angeles (USC and UCLA), 1,800.
