IOWA CITY — Former Morehead State guard Drew Thelwell has committed to Iowa men’s basketball via the transfer portal, he announced Wednesday on social media.
Thelwell averaged 10 points and 6.2 assists last year on a Morehead State team that won the Ohio Valley Conference and earned an NCAA tournament berth. The Eagles, a No. 14 seed, lost to Illinois in the first round.
The Orlando native led the OVC in assists and assist-to-turnover ratio last season and was in the top 50 nationally in both statistics.
“I am a player that likes to push the ball; Iowa’s system does that and allows you to play free,” Thelwell said via a news release. “This is a dream come true for me. These are the opportunities you think about as a kid.”
Thelwell, who has one year of eligibility remaining, is Iowa’s first commitment via the transfer portal since the end of the 2023-24 season. The 6-foot-3 guard fills a void left by Tony Perkins, who departed via the transfer portal after the season.
“Drew has a complete skill set with exceptional passing abilities and most importantly, he’s a winner,” Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery said in the news release. “He will be a tremendous fit for our program.”
Iowa still has another two open scholarships for next season. Basketball players have until May 1 to enter the transfer portal, but they do not have to commit by then.
