What to know: As time slots go for drawing a crowd, this one does Iowa no favors. The Iowa women’s basketball team is at Nebraska and on Fox at noon, and the Super Bowl is at 5:30.
Those who want to watch both games at Carver may do so. Doors to the public will open at noon and the women’s game will be shown on the arena’s big screens.
But the Hawkeyes’ concern is bouncing back from their 89-79 loss at Penn State Thursday and contending with a Minnesota club that is on a three-game winning streak, with its latest a 59-56 home victory over Michigan State Tuesday.
“Don’t kid yourself,” Michigan State Coach Tom Izzo said after that game. “That’s a good basketball team.”
“They’ve got a terrific team,” Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery said Thursday. “They’ve experienced winning.”
They weren’t good enough to beat Iowa Jan. 15 in Minneapolis when the Hawkeyes scored an 86-77 triumph. Ben Krikke had 25 points and Josh Dix added a career-high 21 to go with five assists. Iowa shot 53.8 percent from the field.
Minnesota forward Dawson Garcia had 30 points in that game and leads the Gophers with 17.3 per game. Guard Elijah Hawkins entered the weekend leading the nation in assists per game with 7.7. He also has 40 steals.
Guard Cam Christie is the most-recent Big Ten Freshman of the Week, an honor Iowa’s Owen Freeman has claimed seven times. Christie came up big down the stretch against Michigan State. He made five 3-pointers in that game and had 19 points and six rebounds. He averages 11.1 points.
Iowa has been reliant on points in the paint recently. It shot 54.7 and 55.9 percent from the field in its last two games, but was a combined 7-of-25 (28 percent) from 3-point distance. Penn State was 12-of-23 against Iowa Thursday, while the Hawkeyes were 4-of-15.
“If you make 9, 10, 11 — get up in the 12 or 13 range — you’ve got a pretty good chance to win,” McCaffery said. “They made 12 and we were still right there. But it’s hard to beat a team at their place when they make 12 3s.”
The Hawkeyes’ free throw-shooting has nearly been impeccable of late. Over their last five games, they are 77-of-87 for 88.5 percent.
