Former Iowa star Keegan Murray scored 19 first-half points for the NBA’s Sacramento Kings Saturday night.
Then he really got heated up.
Murray scored a franchise-record 26 points in the third quarter of the Kings’ 125-104 win over the Utah Jazz in Sacramento. He was an incredible 12-of-13 from 3-point distance and had 45 points after three quarters, and set an NBA record by making 11 straight 3s in a single game, breaking the 12-year-old record of 10 by Denver’s Ty Lawson.
His 12th three of the game came at the third-quarter buzzer to give Sacramento a 106-76 lead.
The second-year pro from Cedar Rapids played sparingly in the fourth quarter. He got the chance to tie the NBA record of 14 threes set by Golden State’s Klay Thompson in 2018, but he missed his two tries from beyond the arc in the period, and left the game with 47 points in 36 minutes.
The Kings’ record for points in a quarter had been Mitch Richmond’s 25, set in 1995.
Murray became the seventh different player to make 12 or more 3s in an NBA game. He is the youngest player to do it.
Murray’s previous NBA-high was 30 points, set last Feb. 7. He made a franchise rookie-record eight 3-pointers in that game. He went on to set the NBA rookie record for 3-pointers in a season with 206.
His season scoring average jumped from 13.8 to 15.5, and his 3-point shooting went from 30.2 percent to 35.7.
