What to know: After a two-game skid, Iowa men’s basketball heads to Indiana for a two-game road trip, beginning with No. 5 Purdue. It’s the Hawkeyes second consecutive ranked matchup, and the second time this year facing a team inside the AP’s top 5.
The Hawkeyes haven’t won a true road game yet this season, currently sitting at 0-3.
Purdue’s one loss this season was to, now No. 3 Iowa State, whom the Hawkeyes also lost to in December. Since the Boilermakers’ loss to the Cyclones, Purdue has won the last seven games — including a nonconference win over No. 21 Auburn.
Iowa’s two losses to Minnesota and No. 13 Illinois forced the Hawkeyes out of the AP Top 25, falling to the de facto No. 28 position behind Saint Louis and Kansas. Both of Iowa’s two games had the Hawkeyes playing from behind in the second half, with Iowa attempting to overcome double-digit deficits.
McCollum said the Hawkeyes had been dealing with illness throughout last week, but said on Tuesday that he believes the team has been getting better — particularly surround Tavion Banks, who’d played through illness against Illinois. Banks led Iowa with 16 points in the loss to the Fighting Illini, despite not starting in that game.
This particular matchup pits together two of the best point guards in the country: Iowa’s Bennett Stirtz and Braden Smith. Smith, a senior at Purdue, leads his team with 14.1 points per game.
Smith is one of four Boilermakers averaging at least 10 points per game, with forward Trey Kaufman-Renn averaging a double-double with 13.3. points per game and 10 rebounds per game.
“They've got the kind of perfect pieces,” Iowa head coach Ben McCollum said. “They're just built so well, and they're so well coached offensively. Their point guard, their bigs, and then they’re shooting with space, too.”
