What to know: Iowa last played Dec. 20, smoking Bucknell by a 94-39 margin. It was the fewest points allowed by an Iowa team since 2013 (North Carolina-Wilmington had 39 in the 2013-14 season opener.
The Hawkeyes shot 60.3 percent from the field in the game and defensively had 19 steals. Seven of them came from Isaia Howard, the most for an Iowa player since 2010.
Three players scored in double figures for the Hawkeyes, with Alvaro Folgueiras coming off the bench for a game-high 17 points. Tavion Banks added 16.
“I don’t think there’s a physical fatigue that goes on a ton, even with players,” Iowa Coach Ben McCollum said of holiday time off. “I think it’s more of an emotional, mental fatigue. So it certainly helps those guys to kind of back off of that. You want to make sure they keep their physical up as well.”
Guard Bennett Stirtz continues to lead Iowa in scoring this season at 16.7 points per game. He is eight assists shy of 500 for his college career.
The Hawkeyes are allowing an average of 59.9 points per game this season, which leads the Big Ten Conference and is third nationally. They are 7-0 this season at home.
UMass-Lowell last played Dec. 21, an 88-76 loss to Boston University. It has played two other power-five conference opponents in UConn (a 110-47 loss) and Wake Forest (a 109-75 loss).
Senior forward Austin Green leads the River Hawks in scoring at 15.0 points per game.
“They’re pretty simple offensively, pretty simple defensively,” McCollum said. “They’ll be a good team coming out of the break for us. We’re certainly excited to get back onto the floor and get our rhythm back.”
