What to know: Iowa will try to build on its 90-85 home win over Minnesota Sunday when the Hawkeyes rallied from a 20-point second-half deficit. That was the second-largest second-half comeback in program history.
Owen Freeman had 17 points and 14 rebounds in that game, making him the first Hawkeye freshman to have four double-doubles in a season since Luka Garza in 2017-18. Monday, he was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the eighth time this season.
Maryland defeated Iowa 69-67 in Iowa City on Jan. 24. Senior guard Jahmir Young scored on a drive with 1.5 seconds left for the game-winning points, and had eight points in the last 1:26.
Young averages 22.8 points in Big Ten games, second in the league. His 2,454 career points are second among current NCAA players. He has started every one of the 143 games he has played over his five years at Charlotte and Maryland.
“So quick and crafty,” Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery described Young Tuesday. Defending him “has got to be a collective effort.”
The Terrapins are coming off a 79-75 double-overtime loss at Ohio State last Saturday.
Iowa has won its last two games at Maryland, 89-67 in 2021 and 110-87 in 2022.
Iowa senior forward Patrick McCaffery had 21 points Sunday, his top scoring total since the second game of this season. The Hawkeyes outscored Minnesota by 26 points when he was in the game.
McCaffery has 60 career starts including 15 this season, but has settled in to a sixth-man role, scoring in double-figures the last three games and making all 14 of his free throws in that span.
“The guys respect him and I think they respect the fact that he’s accepted that role,” said Fran McCaffery.
“So I’m just really proud of him and how he’s responded.”
CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein reported last week that Iowa will play Utah on Dec. 21 at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Hawkeyes have played Colorado, Gonzaga and Utah State there in the past. Utah will be in the Big 12 next season.
