What to know: This is the first Big Ten Conference game for Maryland, the second for Iowa. The Hawkeyes lost Tuesday night at Michigan State, 71-52.
Iowa shot just 37.8 percent from the field in the game and was outrebounded by a whopping margin of 37-18. Bennett Stirtz was the only Hawkeyes player to score in double figures with 14 points, though he went just 4 of 10 from the field.
“We didn’t get out of actions very quickly. Our offense was very stagnant,” said Iowa Coach Ben McCollum. “We didn’t get to the next action consistently enough. And you need to get to multiple actions against them.
“Then I thought from a box-out perspective we did OK. I think what happened was a lot of the perimeter guys came in and crashed, and we didn’t do a good job of staying engaged from a defensive perspective there. It wasn’t a size issue as much as it was a we-didn’t-box-them-out issue.”
Maryland also last played Tuesday night, beating Wagner at home, 89-63. The Terrapins’ three losses this season have come to Georgetown (70-60), No. 12 Gonzaga (100-61) and No. 8 Alabama (105-72).
Point guard Stirtz leads Iowa in scoring by Stirtz at 18.0 points per game. He also averages a team-best 5.3 assists.
He is the only Hawkeye to average double figures in scoring.
Maryland, under first-year head coach Buzz Williams, is led in scoring by 6-foot-9 junior forward-center Pharrel Payne. The Twin Cities native averages 18.9 points and 6.8 rebounds.
“They are another good offensive rebounding team,” McCollum said. “Historically they do play fast. I don’t know how fast their possessions are (this season), I’d have to check that. But historically they play fast. A multiple defensive team. Then obviously they’ve got a good big guy in Pharrel Payne.”
