Iowa has its first high school recruit secured in Ben McCollum’s stewardship as the Hawkeyes’ head coach.
Trevin Jirak, a 6-foot-9 forward/center from West Des Moines Valley, flipped his commitment from Northern Iowa to Iowa Friday.
Jirak’s Valley teams won the last three Class 4A state-championships. He was awarded Iowa’s “Mr. Basketball” honor this year and also was the Iowa MaxPreps Player of the Year.
Jirak averaged 16.2 points, 9.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.1 blocks for Valley. He averaged 16 points and 11.3 rebounds in this year’s state tourney.
He committed to UNI last July 11 after also getting scholarship offers from North Dakota State and McCollum’s Drake program.
“Trevin's combination of size and skill makes him unique and a great fit for the way we play,” UNI Coach Ben Jacobson said after Jirak committed to the Panthers. “His passing, scoring on the block, and ability to make threes are all things our fans can get excited about.”
Friday, Jirak became the first Iowan on McCollum’s Hawkeyes squad and the team’s seventh scholarship player overall. To see Iowa’s updated roster, click here.
