The Hawkeyes are coming off an 81-61 defeat at Illinois Tuesday, a season-low in points for Iowa. Illinois had allowed an average of 102.5 points in its previous two games.
Northwestern won 75-62 at Minnesota the same night for its second-straight victory, both on the road. The other was a 70-49 win at Ohio State on Feb. 20.
Thursday, Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery said guard Drew Thelwell will return to play Friday after missing Tuesday’s game with an ankle issue.
Wildcats junior forward Nick Martinelli is the Big Ten’s leading scorer. He had 29 points at Minnesota to raise his average to 20.1 points per game.
Northwestern forward Brooks Barnhizer had 21 points and 10 rebounds against Iowa in December. He is out for the rest of the season with a foot injury after averaging 17.1 points, 8.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists. Senior guard Jalen Leach (14.3 ppg) is also done for the season, with an ACL injury.
Iowa is 1-7 on the road, having been outscored by 14.9 points per game.
Northwestern is billing this as Gothic Night, with fans encouraged to wear black.
Former Iowa player Devyn Marble is averaging 15.8 points for professional team FC Porto in Portugal. Marble’s senior season at Iowa was 2013-14. He scored 1,694 points in his Hawkeyes career. One of his teammates at Porto is Wes Washpun, formerly of Cedar Rapids Washington and Northern Iowa.
