IOWA CITY — Raina Harmon, who has served as assistant coach during the brightest era in the history of the Iowa women’s basketball program, has been hired as head coach at Florida Gulf Coast.
“I am absolutely honored to be named the next head coach at Florida Gulf Coast University. This position is one of the best jobs in the country and I am grateful for the opportunity to lead such a prestigious program," Harmon said in a release by FGCU.
“This program has a standard of excellence, and I can't wait to build upon that legacy as I commit to developing our student-athletes on and off the court. I look forward to connecting with the FGCU community, our fans and most importantly, our players as we embark on this journey together.”
Iowa posted a 208-63 record in Harmon’s time on the Iowa bench, both under Lisa Bluder and Jan Jensen. The Hawkeyes advanced to the NCAA championship game in 2023 and 2024.
“It's a great day for FGCU to welcome Raina Harmon as the next leader of our women's basketball program,” director of athletics Colin Hargis said. “Her energy, passion and commitment to student-athletes combined with her coaching experience will champion the continued growth and success for the FGCU women's basketball program."
FGCU was 30-4 this season, advancing to the NCAA tournament before falling to Oklahoma in the first round.
The Eagles have reached the NCAA 11 times since 2012, reaching the second round on four occasions.
Prior to Iowa, Harmon spent two years at Michigan as the director of women's basketball operations before coaching at her alma mater, Central Michigan.
In the wake of the news, Jensen tweeted: “While it’s hard to see (Harmon) leave, I couldn’t be happier for her. She’s worked hard for her opportunity and she’s going to be a great head coach.”
Harmon will be officially introduced at FGCU on Tuesday.
