A half-a-loaf wasn’t a bit filling for the Iowa men’s basketball team Sunday.
After playing very well in taking a 51-47 lead to halftime, the Hawkeyes weren’t even left with crumbs Sunday at the XFINITY Center in College Park, Md. The Terrapins outscored Iowa 54-24 in the second half and won, 101-75.
Iowa fell to 14-11 overall, 5-9 in the Big Ten. Maryland, which had never scored 101 points in a Big Ten game, is 10-5, 20-6.
The Hawkeyes made 8 of 13 3-pointers and shot 57.1 percent from the field in the first half. Maryland, however, shot 58.2 percent for the whole game. Meanwhile, Iowa missed all 13 of its second-half 3-pointers and shot 29.7 overall in the half.
Maryland guard Rodney Rice scored the first eight points of the second half in wresting the lead from Iowa, and his team opened that half with a 23-4 run. The way the Terrapins racked up points often seemed as fast as anything happening concurrently in the Daytona 500.
All five Maryland starters scored at least 16 points. Guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie had 26 points, one off his career-high. He also had seven assists. Freshman Derik Queen had 18 points and 13 rebounds.
Iowa was led by Pryce Sandfort’s 15 points, with 13 coming in the first half. Starting forwards Payton Sandfort and Seydou Traore had 14 apiece. All of Traore’s points came before halftime.
The Hawkeyes shrugged off Maryland making its first seven shots on its way to a 24-15 lead. Iowa scored the next eight points to tighten the game, then went ahead 34-31 with 6:45 left on a Seydou Traore and stayed in front the rest of the half.
Iowa played its second-straight game without starting guard Drew Thelwell, and center Riley Mulvey also was unable to play after averaging over 10 minutes in the Hawkeyes’ last three games.
The Hawkeyes come home for two games this week against their new Big Ten friends from the Pacific Northwest. Oregon is at Iowa Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., and Washington faces the Hawkeyes Saturday at 3 p.m.
