IOWA CITY — It’s been a while since Iowa has searched for a new men’s basketball coach.
Internet Explorer still was the most popular web browser. The Black Eyed Peas’ “Imma Be” was that week’s Billboard No. 1 song. McDonald’s was in its first year of offering free WiFi.
Fast-forward 15 years, and the Hawkeyes are looking for a men’s basketball coach again after reportedly parting ways with Fran McCaffery on Friday following a 17-16 season.
Here is a look at the McCaffery era, by the numbers:
0 — Trips to the second weekend of the NCAA tournament. His last two predecessors, Todd Lickliter (2007-10) and Steve Alford (1999-2007), failed to reach that stage as well.
1 — Big Ten tournament title. (It happened in 2022.)
2 — Technical fouls in McCaffery’s final game as the head coach at Iowa, leading to his ejection.
3 — First-team consensus All-Americans coached since 2020.
4 — Seasons in which the Hawkeyes finished the reason ranked in the final AP Top 25. Iowa’s highest poll finish was in 2020-21, when it was No. 8.
6 — NBA draft picks from Iowa. That includes fourth-overall pick Keegan Murray in 2022 and 23rd-overall pick Kris Murray in 2023. The other four were second-round selections.
7 — NCAA tournament appearances at Iowa.
9 — Seasons in which McCaffery’s Hawkeyes finished No. 50 or higher in college basketball analytics site KenPom’s rankings. It most recently happened in 2022-23, when Iowa was No. 41.
11 — Total postseason appearances, including four trips to the NIT.
13 — Seasons with a final record at or above .500.
15 — Seasons at Iowa, making him the longest-tenured head coach in program history.
33.6 — Percentage of seats at Carver-Hawkeye Arena filled for Iowa men’s basketball games in 2024-25 for its 18 regular-season home games and one preseason exhibition.
297 — Wins as head coach at Iowa. That’s more than any other coach in program history. (Tom Davis has the next-highest win total with 271 in his 13 seasons at the helm.)
.504 — McCaffery’s Big Ten winning percentage at Iowa.
548 — Total wins as a Division I head coach, including his tenures at Lehigh, UNC-Greensboro and Siena.
.589 — McCaffery’s overall winning percentage at Iowa.
