IOWA CITY — Here’s a good way to remember a historic day: 22 on 2/2.
Caitlin Clark’s iconic No. 22 will go to the Carver-Hawkeye Arena rafters Feb. 2, the same day in which the Iowa women’s basketball team faces JuJu Watkins and USC.
Clark, of course, will be in attendance for the game which tips off at 12:30 p.m. and will air on Fox.
“I'm forever proud to be a Hawkeye and Iowa holds a special place in my heart that is bigger than just basketball,” Clark said in a statement. “It means the world to me to receive this honor and to celebrate it with my family, friends and alumni. It will be a great feeling to look up in the rafters and see my jersey alongside those that I've admired for so long.”
Clark’s jersey will be the third retired, joining Michelle Edwards’ 30 and Megan Gustafson’s 10.
“Caitlin Clark has not only redefined excellence on the court but has also inspired countless young athletes to pursue their dreams with passion and determination,” Iowa athletics director Beth Goetz said in a statement.
“Retiring her number is a testament to her extraordinary contributions and a celebration of her legacy that will continue to inspire future generations. Hawkeye fans are eager to say thank you for so many incredible moments.”
In a 17-day span late last season, Clark broke Kelsey Plum's record (all-time women's NCAA Division I scoring leader), Lynette Woodard (women’s major college scoring record), and passed Pete Maravich (most career points in Division I history, men or women).
Clark is a two-time national player of the year and led the Hawkeyes to NCAA tournament runner-up finishes in 2023 and 2024. She now plays for the Indiana Fever of the WNBA, and was 2024 rookie of the year.
