What to know: The Hawkeyes began the season Tuesday with a 110-68 rout of North Dakota. They were one of 52 Division I men’s teams that scored 100-plus points Monday through Wednesday.
Alabama State started with a 69-59 loss at Mississippi. The Hornets shot just 27.4 percent from the field, but led the game with 5:17 left in the first half.
“We missed so many open looks,” said Alabama State Coach Tony Madlock. “I mean, so many open looks.”
Alabama State was 8-23 last season. It was picked to finish eighth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference in a poll of league coaches and communication professionals. Iowa is 18-0 against SWAC teams.
Iowa scored 105 points against the Hornets in 2018, 108 in 2021.
Both teams have a son of the head coach starting for them. Iowa has Patrick McCaffery, son of coach Fran McCaffery. Alabama State has TJ Madlock.
Iowa freshman guard Brock Harding is one of just three Big Ten players to record seven assists in his opening game this season. He did so in 10 minutes and 39 seconds of playing time.
Iowa’s signees for 2024 are 6-foot-8 Cooper Koch of Peoria, Ill., and 6-8 Chris Tadjo of Montreal. Both are four-star recruits.
McCaffery said he offered Koch a scholarship when the son of former Iowa forward J.R. Koch was at “either the end of seventh grade or the beginning of eighth grade. It was about seventh grade where we said ‘OK, this kid’s going to be special,’ We offered him then and just stayed on him.
“He’s so gifted in so many ways. ... He makes shots, he makes plays. He really understands the game. ... I think he’s got a chance to be a great one here, without question. ... Coop may very well end up being one of the best shooters to play here. He could be in the Jordan Bohannon level with his shooting ability.”
McCaffery said Tadjo “has a motor that you just don’t see very often. When you’re 6-8 and 225 and have a motor, those guys affect the game. He’s got a really good skill set. He can put it on the deck, he can shoot it outside.
“I’m just really excited about both of these guys. I think they’ll be impact players, without question.”
