Following is the schedule for Houby Days in Czech Village in Cedar Rapids, for May 14-16, 2010:
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – The Czech Village Association is hard at work planning the 33

Annual Houby Days Festival which celebrates the morel mushroom, one of the first signs of spring. The festival is May 14 – 16 in Czech Village and features family friendly parade, food, music, folk dancing, Parade of Kroje, Miss Czech-Slovak Iowa Pageant, carnival, and unique contests. The first event of the festival is the popular Taste of Czech and Slovak hosted by the Museum Guild of the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library on Friday, May 14 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Saint Ludmila Catholic Church Social Hall, 211 21

Avenue SW, Cedar Rapids. Tickets are $10 for 20 samples, $6 for 10 samples. Live music performed by Leonard Reyman and Darlene Suchomel.
Taste of Czech and Slovak features over 30 authentic Old World favorites, including jitrnice, schunkefleke, gulas, cerna kuba, zelniky, and kolace. This year, there are several new additions to the event. Czech Village and New Bohemian chefs and restaurants are playing a key role in the event this year.
“It's great to see the Czech Village and New Bohemia neighborhoods rising above the flood of 2008 and participating in our event,” stated event organizer Lucretia Volsch. “Several restaurants are preparing their specialties for the event, which will add unique varieties and flavors to our food selection this year.”
Festivities continue on Saturday with music, craft vendors, parade, the Miss Czech-Slovak Iowa Pageant, a carnival, houby contest, car show, bingo, and a nail driving contest. The Egg and Houby Breakfast will be at the P3 Union Hall on the east end of the Bridge of Lions at 611 14

Avenue SW. Tickets are $7 in advance, $8 at the door, kids 12 and under are $4.50. In addition, the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library will host the Lipa Slovak Folk Ensemble and Svetlusky Children's Folk Ensemble. Their performances begin at 2:30. The National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library is offering $1 off admission for those with a Houby Days button or anyone wearing red both Saturday and Sunday. St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, 1230 5

Street SE, will host a Pork and Dumpling Dinner following their 4:00 Folk Hymn Mass. Tickets are $9 in advance, $10 at the door, and $4.50 for kids 12 and under. Tours of the historic church and the Czech Heritage Park are part of the festivities.
Sunday, is Children's Day and features the Egg and Houby Breakfast, children's tractor pull, bingo, carnival, the ever-popular Cabbage Roll race, a walking tour of Czech Village, and a puppet show by the Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre Co. at 2:30. They will perform two shows: “The Musical Ant,” and “The Rabbit in the Moon” at the Kosek Bandstand. St. Wenceslaus will serve a Lunch in the Park featuring pork loin sandwiches following the 10:30 Folk Hymn Mass.
