The Story of Brucemore kicks off Adult Summer Reading
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – June 4, 2010 – The 2010 Summer Reading Programs for Adults kicks off its programming with The Story of Brucemore, 6:00 p.m. on Monday, June 14. This is the first in a series of summer programs centered on gardens and gardening.
The estate and gardens at Brucemore have a fascinating history, and staff will be on hand to share that history with you. Brucemore, a National Historic Trust Site in Cedar Rapids, is a museum and so much more. Learn all about what makes this beautiful estate such a wonderful part of our community.
This is the first in a series of programs for the Adult Summer Reading Program, Grow @ Your Library! Additional events are listed below.
- Monday, June 28, 6:00 PM: Going Native: Using Native Species for Small Scale Landscaping and Gardening, presented by staff from the Tallgrass Prairie Center at UNI. Learn some of the advantages and disadvantages to using native plants to landscape on a small scale. Find out which plants should be used for various conditions and which plants should be avoided or used minimally. Find out what resources are available in your area to get information on making your landscape a more sustainable and natural place to be.
- Monday, July 12, 6:00 PM: Deep Nature: Photographs from Iowa, presented by authors and founding members of the Iowa Native Plant Society, Linda and Robert Scarth. They will lead a discussion on their book, “Deep Nature: Photographs from Iowa.” Discover the beauty all around us, even in the smallest things.
- Monday, July 26, 6:00 PM: Edible Gardens, presented by Master Gardeners. Learn the beauty and benefits of planting your own edible garden.
