In a demonstration of demolition, the old Cascade water tower came down hard on January 15, 1988. The 60,000-gallon tower, which had been located on the bluffs of the Maquoketa River in Cascade, Iowa since the 1890s, had earlier been replaced by two new water tanks. As townspeople watched that Friday afternoon, the metal giant was toppled by the force of a pulling machine.
