Raising city chickens - one man's view in 1912

The story today about the effort to change Iowa City law that forbids urban chickens was interesting. My grandparents, who lived on Old Marion Road, had chickens, a huge garden and a small orchard up until the early 1960s, when the city grew around them. Backyard hen houses were common all over Iowa in the first half of the 20th century, but they weren't always popular. This view of chickens in the yard was published in the Jan. 3, 1912 Evening Gazette:
