Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house on the campus of Iowa State University became an ice castle after 17 hours of effort by the Ames Fire Department to stop a blaze that totally destroyed the structure's living quarters. After the fire was put out, firefighters on Saturday, January 16, 1982 had to chop through up to three feet of ice to free their fire hoses after temperatures dipped near -20 F, with wind chills near -100 Fahrenheit. Fraternity members in the house escaped the blaze.
