Down it comes: The demolition of the 80-year-old Central Junior High School building in Iowa City began Thursday, October 27, 1983, with the razing of the school's gymnasium. The school and property that surrounded it were sold by the Iowa City Community School District to nearby Mercy Hospital. Mercy paid $1.6 million for the school property for use as expanded parking for patients, visitors and staff. The building was closed at the end of the 1982-1983 school year because of declining enrollment.
