Benton Bridge For Sale In Iowa City
N/A
Feb. 24, 2009 6:57 am
The city of Iowa City was seeking a buyer in early 1989 for the 480-foot-long, 245-ton Benton Street bridge, shown here on February 24, 1989. The bridge was built in 1948-1949, and was the first span built using welded steel construction. Because of its historical significance, federal authorities told the city it would allow the community to build a new bridge only if it made an effort to find someone who would preserve the old bridge, if possible. City officials said it would be too costly to repair the bridge, which by this time was unsafe for heavy traffic.
