Joseph Czestochowski (left), director of the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, points out construction progress on November 3, 1988, inside the Carnegie Library section of the new art museum facility to visiting Chinese artist Zheng Bai-zhong (second from left), interpreter Shan Lin Hua, a University of Iowa graduate student, and Albert Kwak of Iowa City (right). Kwak helped arrange Zheng's trip to Cedar Rapids. The old Carnegie Library was constructed from 1904-1905 and was the city's public library until January, 1985. Clearing of the 400 block of Third Avenue SE for the new $8 million museum began in mid-1987, with construction coming several months later. The new Cedar Rapids Museum of Art opened on December 9, 1989.
