Iowa State suspends, investigates men’s hockey club for hazing allegations

Iowa State University has suspended its Men’s Cyclone Hockey Club following allegations of hazing, and administrators have launched an investigation into those accusations as well as the club’s finances, organizational structure and oversight.

The suspension, announced at 4:50 p.m. Wednesday, is effective immediately “based on the serious nature of the allegations.”

“This includes team meetings, practice, competition, recruiting and other events,” according to the Iowa State University News Service. “The university’s investigation will focus on team hazing as well as the club’s finances, organizational structure and oversight by Recreation Services.”

Cyclone Hockey is not associated with ISU Athletics, as it’s a club sport with three men’s teams, according to ISU News Service. After the investigation, Iowa State will work with team members to develop a plan to restructure the club “to align with other sport clubs under Recreation Services.”

Iowa State last year launched ongoing health and safety reviews of all its sport clubs after two ISU Crew Club members died after their boat capsized on Little Wall Lake on March 28, 2021.

This investigation of the hockey club, according to ISU News Service, is separate from that comprehensive review.
