Football’s attraction comes naturally to Solon junior Ben Kampman. His dad and assistant coach, Aaron, is well-known for his University of Iowa career, preceding a 10-year stint in the NFL that yielded two Pro Bowl selections. Ben Kampman emerged as a key component to Solon’s defense, ranking sixth in Class 3A with seven sacks.

Linebacker-fullback Tate Joens is a senior for a Cedar Rapids Prairie football team that plays Friday night at Southeast Polk in a Class 5A state playoff quarterfinal. His brothers, father and uncles all played at the school, a string of Joenses that will end after this season.

North Linn’s football team lost starting quarterback Tate Haughenbury to mononucleosis at the end of the regular season. But the Lynx still have won two playoff games, including 28-14, Friday night over Mason City Newman. North Linn is in the quarterfinals for the second time in school history.
