Suspected Vinton-Shellsburg mumps cases turned out to be parotitis

Reports of mumps cases in the Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District turned out to be a form of parotitis, health officials confirmed.

According to a newsletter issued by Vinton-Shellsburg Superintendent Mary Jo Hainstock Friday, the illnesses were considered "highly unusual," and were analyzed by the Iowa Department Public Health (IDPH). It was found the cases were forms of parotitis, a salivary gland infection that mimics mumps, Hainstock said.

Hainstock said the district is working closely with the Benton County Health Department and IDPH to ensure accurate and current information is provided on these cases and any further student health concerns this flu season.
