DES MOINES, IOWA – The Iowa chapter of The ALS Association has been recognized by the organization for excellence in advocacy at the federal level, one of only two chapters in the nation to receive the honor.
National Trustee Andrew Brophy said the Iowa chapter “never stops working to make sure that Senator Tom Harkin continues to be strong advocate for the ALS community.” Brophy noted that Senator Harkin is chairman of the Appropriations Committee's Health Subcommittee, leading the Senate Committee that is responsible for ALS research funding.
“Thanks to the Iowa chapter's efforts, we have a champion who does more than just talk about ALS,” Brophy added. “He takes action, appropriating funding for ALS research and leading the effort to make sure the Congress is an active partner in the fight against ALS.”
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), more commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks nerve cells and pathways in the brain and spinal cord. The ALS Association's mission is leading the fight to treat and cure ALS through global research and nationwide advocacy while also empowering people with Lou Gehrig's Disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them with compassionate care and support.
