As the new year begins, it’s natural to feel a mix of excitement and overwhelm. The pressure to set ambitious goals can sometimes leave us feeling scattered rather than focused. That’s why bestselling author and motivational speaker Mel Robbins suggests starting with an end-of-year audit before diving into New Year resolutions.
Robbins shares, “If I wouldn’t have done this audit before the new year, my plan for next year would be MORE. But no, my audit is actually telling me, no, no, you have to do LESS. You have to focus on the things that actually matter to you.”
Reflect on 2024
Before setting goals for 2025, take some time to review the past year. Robbins recommends asking yourself these questions:
- What were the highlights of 2024? Look through your camera roll to revisit joyful moments, fun experiences, and the people who energized you. Write down these highlights to celebrate and carry that positive energy forward.
- What were the hardest parts? Identify the people, situations, or commitments that drained your energy. It’s OK to feel sadness or discomfort during this reflection. Allow yourself to feel all the feelings, then ask what lessons these challenges taught you.
- What did you learn about yourself? Celebrate personal growth and insights gained from both highs and lows.
Plan for 2025
Use your audit to shape the year ahead:
- What will you stop doing? Let go of commitments, habits, or routines that no longer serve you.
- What will you start doing? Identify habits or goals that align with what matters most.
- What will you continue doing? Focus on activities and relationships that bring you joy and purpose.
- What’s one small step you can take today? Begin moving in the direction of your 2025 goals immediately.
Focus on 4 daily wins
If setting big resolutions feels overwhelming, simplify your approach by focusing on four daily wins:
- Physical win: Move your body — take a walk, lift weights, stretch or practice yoga. Even small actions add up.
- Mental win: Engage your mind — read a book, listen to a podcast, or practice mindfulness.
- Emotional win: Take care of your heart and soul — spend time with loved ones, journal, pray, connect with your higher power or enjoy hobbies that bring you joy.
- Honest accountability win: Be truthful with yourself — track progress, acknowledge setbacks, and course-correct as needed.
This framework keeps growth manageable and consistent, promoting balance and well-being without overwhelm.
One word for the year
If the four daily wins feel like too much to start with, try choosing one word as your guiding principle for 2025. Words like "focus," “love,” "balance," or "growth" can serve as reminders to keep you aligned with your intentions.
Your best year yet
The real accomplishment when setting new goals is learning to love yourself in the present moment, while also continuing to challenge yourself to live your best life. Taking time to reflect, reset, and create a plan for 2025 is a wonderful gift you can give yourself. Whether you focus on one word, four wins, or a combination of both, approach this year with clarity, discipline, and excitement. Wishing you love, growth, and endless possibilities in 2025!
