Reconnecting with our inner wisdom improves spiritual, emotional, physical health
I recently had lunch with my pediatrician friend, Dr. Padget Skogman, founder of PediatricianPlus.com. We were talking about ways to feel more grounded in our daily lives and how to invite children into moments of mindfulness.
Padget shared a beautiful prayer she says each night with her three young children. Her prayer is from Helen Schucman’s book, “A Course in Miracles.”
Together they pray
“Where would You have me go?
What would You have me do?
What would You have me say, and to whom?”
What a beautiful way to end the night and prepare for the next day. These open-ended questions aren’t just for kids. They’re a powerful practice for adults too. They invite us to pause, surrender our plans and open our hearts to guidance from something bigger than ourselves — whether you call it God, love, the Holy Spirit or your own inner wisdom.
One night, after praying together, one of Padget’s kids asked, “But how will we know the answers? What does God sound like?”
I loved Padget’s answer: “It will sound like your own voice. It will come from your heart, out of love.”
We have all been equipped with an inner voice that nudges us toward peace, clarity and connection. But that voice is rarely loud. It doesn’t shout. It’s not dramatic. Most of the time, it’s a whisper. A quiet knowing that emerges when we pause long enough to listen.
Just last month, I felt a strong urge to text a friend. But I hesitated; I didn’t want to seem too overbearing, so I didn’t reach out. That evening, she shared that she was walking through a personal crisis. My heart sank. That moment I felt earlier, it was my intuition. It was God calling me to love. And unfortunately, I ignored it. As a result, I am promising myself to listen more intentionally and act when I hear another Divine nudge.
So how do we strengthen that inner voice?
- Pray. You can begin with the simple prayer above or create your own. Invite guidance.
- Pause. Sit with the prayer and be mindful of the power prayer can have.
- Journal. Writing can help cultivate your highest self. Let your thoughts flow without editing.
- Trust. Believe that your prayers are heard and that everything is working for your greater good, even if you don’t fully understand it.
- Act. This is the most important part. When you feel a tug toward love, kindness or truth, do your best to follow it. Action leads to momentum. Momentum leads to miracles, even the small miracle of making someone’s day a little bit better.
If you are feeling “off” or far from your intuition or God, it’s often a sign you’re far from yourself. As my mom once told me, “Feeling off is a gift, because it’s your signal that something needs to change.”
Spiritual health is one of the foundational pillars of a healthy life.
Take a moment and ask yourself: What habits, patterns or behaviors am I being called to shift?
Maybe it’s adding five minutes of quiet time each morning. Maybe it’s taking action on something you have been putting off. Maybe it’s reaching out when you feel that inner nudge — without overthinking.
So today, pause. Pray. Journal. Listen. The guidance you’re seeking is often whispering in the still small voice of your heart.
And when you feel that quiet nudge? Follow it and take action. That’s the Holy Spirit whispering to you. That’s love.
