February is the month known for love, chocolate and dates! It’s no surprise that this month is so sweet. However, have you ever thought about a different way to strengthen your relationship? Working out as a couple might be the answer.
Working out with your significant other isn’t just about getting fit; it’s also about building a stronger bond, having fun, and maybe even a little healthy competition. First, there is some clumsy weightlifting and uncoordinated lunges. Then soon, they’re laughing, encouraging each other, and maybe even flexing in the mirror.
Why is working out as a couple so important?
It not only builds muscles but builds memories, strengthens bonds and offers a chance to grow together. Plus, you get your own personal cheerleader during that last set. Exercise turns an ordinary day into a fun challenge. It’s a mix of sweat and smiles and a great way to connect.
A few tips to help you and your partner get started:
Set fun goals together
Instead of just aiming for the broad term to “get fit,” set fun and specific goals.
Whether it’s training for a 5K or mastering a new yoga pose, having a goal makes workouts more exciting.
Schedule workout dates
Treat your workouts like you would treat an important date. Put them on your calendar and stick to them. It’s a great way to keep yourselves accountable.
Be each other’s cheerleader
Support and encourage each other, especially on tough days. A little “You’ve got this!” can go a long way in keeping both of you motivated and committed.
Here are some couples' workout ideas:
Cardio
Cardio exercises are great for getting your heart rate up and burning calories together. Plus, they’re perfect for chatting and motivating each other.
- Beginner couples: Start with a brisk 30-minute walk around the neighborhood. Easy on the joints and great for catching up on your day.
- Intermediate couples: Try a 20-minute jog together. Maintain a steady pace and enjoy the scenery.
- Advanced couples: Go for a 10-round HIIT circuit with 1 minute of burpees followed by 1 minute of rest. Push each other to keep going strong.
Strength training
Strength training helps build muscle and increase endurance.
- Beginner couples: Do 3 sets of 10 body weight squats together. Stand side by side and cheer each other on.
- Intermediate couples: Perform 3 sets of 12 walking lunges across the room. Switch turns and support each other’s form.
- Advanced couples: Hold dumbbells and do 3 sets of 15 weighted squats. Ensure good form and push each other to the limit.
Core workouts
A strong core is essential for overall fitness.
- Beginner couples: Hold a plank facing each other and give high-fives. Aim for 3 sets of 10 high-fives each.
- Intermediate couples: Try synchronized planks for 1 minute, rest, then repeat 3 times. Stay in sync and encourage each other to stay strong.
- Advanced couples: Assist each other in doing 3 sets of 8 partner pullups. Offer support and challenge each other to improve.
Working out with your partner isn’t just about physical gain, it’s about building a stronger, happier relationship. It’s a chance to motivate each other, celebrate victories big and small, and create lasting memories together. So, next time you’re thinking about a date, swap dinner for a workout session.
