Iowa reports 169 new COVID-19 cases, 4 new deaths Tuesday

Iowa added 169 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday, bringing the total number of people in the state who have tested positive to 370,839, according to data from the Iowa Department of Public Health.
The state’s seven-day average for new cases is 172 — the lowest since April 18, 2020, and continuing the downward trend for the 13th consecutive day.
Linn County added 16 COVID-19 cases as of 11 a.m. Tuesday, bringing the county’s case total to 21,012. The county’s seven-day average was 11.
Johnson County reported seven cases for a total of 14,544 and a seven-day average of five.
Forty-one of the cases reported in Iowa on Tuesday were among children up to age 17, bringing the total in that age group to 44,418.
Three new cases were reported among education workers, bringing that total to 7,741.
Confirmed deaths
The state reported four new confirmed COVID-19 deaths Tuesday, bringing Iowa’s death toll to 6,039.
Of those deaths, one was between 41 and 60, one was between 61 and 80, and two were 81 or older. The deaths took place between April 25 and May 16, health department data shows.
One death each was reported in Linn, O’Brien, Polk and Union counties.
Vaccinations
Across the state, 1,277,968 Iowans — or 40.51 percent of the state’s population — had completed the COVID-19 vaccine as of 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, an increase of 5,125 from Monday.
The number of people who have been fully vaccinated within the state, non-Iowans included, was 1,329,025.
The state reported 1,221,048 people have completed the Moderna or Pfizer two-shot regimen, while 107,977 people have received the single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
The number of total doses administered in the state as of Monday afternoon was 2,720,008.
As of 1:30 p.m. Tuesday 102,128 people in Linn County had been fully vaccinated. That’s 45.05 percent of the county’s total population.
In Johnson County, 77,337 people — or 51.17 percent of the county’s population — have been fully vaccinated.
Hospitalizations
Across the state, 122 people were hospitalized for COVID-19 during the 24-hour period ending at 11 a.m. Tuesday, up four from Monday.
The number of intensive-care patients remained at 33, and the number of patients on ventilators went from 17 to 16.
Long-term care facilities
Two long-term care facility in Iowa are experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks with a total of 17 people who are sick with COVID-19.
An outbreak is considered three or more cases among a facility’s residents and staff.
To date, 2,361 people in these facilities have died as the result of COVID-19, accounting for roughly 39 percent of the state’s death toll.
