Iowa passes 25,000 coronavirus cases, Johnson County cases spike

Iowa on Friday reported 427 new cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed, for a total of 25,164 since the first case was diagnosed in the state in mid-March.

The new cases represent 7.5 percent of the 5,690 tests reported Friday.

Johnson County, which has seen a spike of new COVID-19 cases this week, reported 22 new cases Thursday.

The county reported 24 new cases on Wednesday and 11 on Tuesday, the first double-digit increases since May 6. The totals also represent the first consecutive days of 20-plus cases reported in the county.

Linn County reported 8 new cases on Tuesday, 19 on Wednesday and 9 on Thursday.

Public health officials on Friday reported three more deaths, bringing the state's total to 680.

Hospitalizations due to COVID-19-related illness rose from 176 to 197. Sixty patients are in intensive care units, with 37 on ventilators.

Two Cedar Rapids long-term care facilities, Manor Care Health Services and Living Center West, were removed from the outbreak list.
