Iowa adds 507 COVID-19 cases, 13 deaths on Tuesday

Iowa on Tuesday added 507 new COVID-19 cases and 13 new, confirmed deaths.

The numbers bring state totals to 353,901 cases and 5,835 deaths since last March, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health.

The seven-day average for new cases in Iowa is 511 and the seven-day average for deaths is 15.

Vaccinations

As of Tuesday afternoon, 648,324 Iowans are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. That’s 20.55 percent of all Iowans and 25.83 percent of all Iowans over age 16.

Counting non-Iowans vaccinated in the state, 675,229 people are vaccinated.

As of Tuesday, 1,674,550 total vaccine doses have been administered in Iowa, with 1,612,589 doses going to Iowans.

In Linn County, 122,652 doses have been administered. To date, 49,177 people — or 27.25 percent of the county’s adult population — are fully vaccinated.

In Johnson County, 97,109 doses have been administered, with 38,599 county residents fully vaccinated. That’s 31.05 percent of the county’s adult population.

New cases

Linn County added 22 new virus cases on Tuesday, bringing the county total to 19,998. The county’s seven-day average is 24.

Johnson County added its own 27 new cases, bringing its total to 13,698. Johnson County’s seven-day average is 31.

Of Tuesday’s new cases, 90 were found in youths under the age of 18, bringing the total of infected minors in the state to 40,902 since March.

Confirmed deaths

The 13 deaths reported Tuesday occurred between Feb. 9 and Sunday.

Of those, seven were individuals age 81 and older, five were 61 to 80 years old and one was between 41 and 60.

Polk County reported three of the deaths.

Counties with one death each were Bremer, Butler, Cerro Gordo, Crawford, Pottawattamie, Scott, Sioux, Tama, Wapello and Warren.

Hospitalizations

Across the state, 217 individuals were hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Tuesday, the highest number since 227 on Feb. 25.

Patients in intensive care increased from 47 to 52, and patients on ventilators increased from 23 to 27.

Long term care

Two long-term care facilities in Iowa continue to report COVID-19 outbreaks — three or more cases among residents and staff — with 19 individuals ill.

To date, 2,281 people have died from the virus in Iowa’s care facilities since last March.
