Factoids about the Iowa Hawkeyes and the NFL draft:
Seventy-nine Iowa players have been drafted since Kirk Ferentz became the Hawkeyes’ head coach before the 1999 season. By unit:
Offensive line: 18
Defensive backs: 16
Defensive line: 15
Tight ends: 11
Linebackers: 9
Wide receivers: 4
Quarterbacks: 3
Running backs: 2
Kickers: 1
Iowa has had more first-rounders (10) under Ferentz than seventh-rounders (7). If center Tyler Linderbaum is a first-rounder Thursday, more than half of Ferentz’s first-rounders will be offensive linemen.
The first-rounders by unit:
Offensive line: 5
Tight ends: 3
Defensive line: 1
Linebackers: 1
The Hawkeyes haven’t had a running back or quarterback go in the first round since Ronnie Harmon and Chuck Long did in 1986. No Iowa wide receiver has ever been drafted in the first two rounds.
The NFL team that has picked more of Ferentz’s Iowa players than any other is the Green Bay Packers, with six. The Minnesota Vikings and Denver Broncos have taken five apiece.
Only one of the 32 NFL clubs have never drafted a Hawkeye, that being the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jags pick first Thursday night, and have the first pick of the second round.
If there were do-over drafts, Ferentz players who would be first-rounders would surely include defensive back Bob Sanders (2nd round), offensive lineman Marshal Yanda (3rd), defensive lineman Aaron Kampman (5th) and tight end George Kittle (5th).
Other Ferentz Hawkeyes who were under-drafted include Micah Hyde (5th), Desmond King (5th) and Austin Blythe (7th).
Besides Sanders, Hawkeyes who were second-round picks include Andre Tippett, Ed Podolak, Paul Krause, Bob Jeter, Pat Angerer, Jonathan Babineaux and A.J. Epenesa. Pretty good group.
Iowa has had a player drafted each season since 1977.
Iowa defensive end A.J. Epenesa (left) and offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs (right) warm up on the field before a 2017 game at Kinnick Stadium. Epenesa was a second-round draft pick of the Buffalo Bills and Wirfs a first-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020. (The Gazette)
