Iowa football at Penn State: Live score updates, highlights

Iowa raced to a 24-7 halftime lead Saturday and hung on for a 41-21 win as Kirk Ferentz became the fourth coach to earn 100 Big Ten wins.

The Hawkeyes won their third straight, improving to 3-2 while sending Penn State to 0-5 for the first time ever.

Iowa rushed for 175 yards and four touchdowns, with Mekhi Sargent (2), Tyler Goodson and Spencer Petras doing the scoring honors.

Sean Clifford entered the game at QB in the third quarter with Penn State down 31-7 and threw two TD passes on his first two attempts, but tossed a pair of interceptions in the fourth, including one to Daviyon Nixon that the Iowa D-lineman returned 71 yards for a TD.

Daviyon Nixon tipped a pass that led to a Chauncey Golston pick earlier in the quarter but he wanted one of his own.

And oh, did he get it.

The big man grabbed a Sean Clifford pass and took it back 71 yards to the end zone, with a juke on the way.

7:14 4th: Iowa 34, Penn State 21

Iowa came up with an interception for the 12th straight game when Davyion Nixon tipped a pass at the line of scrimmage and fellow defensive lineman Chauncey Golston caught it.

The Hawkeyes took over at the Penn State 23 and reached the 5, but settled for a 24-yard Keith Duncan field goal.

Sean Clifford is 2-for-2 with two touchdowns.

Keith Duncan missed a 50-yard field goal attempt and Clifford hit Jahan Dotson for a 68-yard touchdown on the very next play. Clifford connected with Keyvone Lee for the 2-point conversion.

This time it was Penn State taking advantage of an Iowa fumble.

Spencer Petras lost the ball and Sean Clifford, the returning starter this season, replaced Will Levis and fired a 28-yard touchdown on his first snap to Brenton Strange.

The extra point attempt was blocked.

6:45 3rd: Iowa 31, Penn State 7

Another Penn State fumble resulted in another Iowa touchdown.

Dane Belton knocked the ball free from quarterback Will Levis and Zach VanValkenburg came up with his second fumble recovery of the game at the Iowa 46.

Iowa used 12 plays to go 54 yards and scored on a 3-yard quarterback sneak from Spencer Petras.

Penn State failed to convert a fourth-and-short for the second time in the quarter and this time Iowa took advantage.

The Hawkeyes went 49 yards in seven plays, with Mekhi Sargent scoring second 1-yard TD of the game. Spencer Petras was 4-for-5 on the drive for 40 yards, including an 18-yard completion to Ihmir Smith-Marsette.

6:43 2nd: Iowa 17, Penn State 7

A Will Levis pitch went awry and Iowa pounced with a fumble recovery and 41-yard scoring drive.

After Spencer Petras' 12-yard pass to Sam LaPorta at the goal line, Mekhi Sargent walked in with a 1-yard touchdown run to put the Hawkeyes up 10.

Mekhi Sargent carried the ball three straight times for 42 yards, setting up a 10-yard Tyler Goodson touchdown run to the pylon for the Hawkeyes to retake the lead.

It's Goodson's 10th touchdown in his last nine games.

2:12 1st: Penn State 7, Iowa 3

Penn State used 14 plays to march 75 yards on its second drive of the game. Keyvone Lee capped it with his first career touchdown, a 6-yard run.

Quarterback Will Levis, making his second career start, carried the ball seven times for 44 yards, including an 11-yard run that set up the TD. He was also 4-for-4 passing for 24 yards.

Iowa took the lead on its first drive of the game with a 40-yard Keith Duncan field goal.
