Reports: Georges Niang signs with Utah Jazz

Jan. 11, 2018 11:52 am, Updated: Jan. 11, 2018 1:11 pm
Georges Niang reportedly is returning to the NBA.
Niang, a 6-foot-8 forward from Iowa State, is said to be about to sign a two-way contract with the Utah Jazz, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.
That's the same team that signed former Cyclone guard Naz Mitrou-Long to a two-way contract last Dec. 23. This report said Mitrou-Long would be waived by the Jazz.
Niang was a second-team Associated Press All-American in 2016 and a third-team AP All-American the year before. He went to training camp with the Golden State Warriors last fall, then joined the Warriors' Santa Cruz affiliate. In 26 games, he has averaged 18.4 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists.
Niang did not play for Santa Cruz in its game on Thursday afternoon.
Should Mitrou-Long be cut, he would likely rejoin Utah's G-League Salt Lake City Stars team. He was an undrafted free agent who went to fall training camp with the Jazz, was waived, and joined the Stars as an affiliate player before signing with Utah. He has played 22 games for Salt Lake City, averaging 15.3 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists.
Mitrou-Long played for just 31 seconds in one game for the Jazz, on Dec. 26. He made his only shot, a 3-pointer.
Two-way players can spend no more than 45 days in a season on an NBA roster, and are with their team's G-League affiliate for the rest of the season.
Two other players from Iowa State's 2015-16 team have NBA contracts. Forward Abdel Nader is a Boston Celtic, and guard Monte Morris has a two-way contract with the Denver Nuggets and is playing for the G-League's Rio Grande Valley Vipers. He has played in one game with the Nuggets. He is averaging 17.9 points and 6.3 assists for Rio Grande Valley.
Nader was a second-round draft pick of Boston in 2016. He played for the Celtics' Maine G-League team last season. Morris was a Denver second-rounder in 2017. Niang was a second-round pick of the Indiana Pacers in 2016 and spent the season under contract to Indiana. He appeared in just 23 games for the Pacers, averaging 0.9 points.
