COLLEGE PARK, Md. — It probably took a while before the ashes at Xfinity Center were done smoldering Thursday night.
Iowa’s Jordan Bohannon was a man on fire against the Maryland Terrapins, torching the Terps with a school single-game record 10 3-pointers and 30 points in the Hawkeyes’ 110-87 victory before leaving the game with 9:08 to play.
The previous record was Chris Kingsbury’s nine, which he accomplished in 1994 against Drake and Long Island.
Bohannon matched his career-high point total and had a team-high five assists. He wasn’t alone in the fury. Iowa sophomore forward Keegan Murray also scored 30. He made 12 of 14 field goal tries.
The Hawkeyes led 101-64 with 6:15 left before the Terrapins made the score less hideous for themselves against Iowa’s subs.
Iowa improved to 16-7 overall, 6-6 in the Big Ten Conference. The Hawkeyes shot 60 percent from the field and made 19 of 34 threes. Maryland is 11-13, 3-10.
The Hawkeyes stormed to a 57-41 halftime lead, their most points in a half against a Big Ten foe since they scored 61 in the second half against Illinois in the 2018 league tournament.
Bohannon made 6 of 9 3s in the half for 18 points. He also set up consecutive Murray scores late in the half.
Maryland made 56 percent of its first-half shots, but got 10 fewer attempts than the Hawkeyes, who had eight offensive rebounds in the first 20 minutes.
Bohannon had made just 17 of 65 3s over his previous 10 games. Coming to this arena was medicine for his soul. He had been 19 of 29 from 3-point distance over three previous games here, including an 8-for-10 effort as a freshman in 2017.
Iowa’s next game is against Nebraska (7-17, 1-12) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Sunday at 1 p.m. The Huskers are fresh off a 78-65 home win over Minnesota Wednesday.
