Jeff Horner named head coach at Truman State

Former Iowa men's basketball star Jeff Horner has his first college head coaching job.

Horner has been named head coach at Division II Truman State (Mo.). He was previously an assistant at North Dakota for three years, where he also spent a season as director of operations.

'I am extremely excited to become a part of the Truman State University family,” Horner said in a release. 'It has always been my dream to be a head coach at the collegiate level and Truman State has taken that chance on me. I want to thank athletic director, Jerry Wollmering, and president, Dr. Sue Thomas, for giving me the opportunity to lead the Bulldog men's basketball program.”

Horner played at Iowa from 2002-06 and was named third-team all-Big Ten twice. He scored 1,506 points and is the program's career leader in assists (612) and 3-pointers made (262).

As a senior at Mason City in 2002, Horner was named Iowa Mr. Basketball. He was head coach at West Des Moines Valley from 2011-14.

'We are excited to have Jeff take over the reins of our men's basketball program,” Wollmering said in a release. 'He has had a ton of success as a player, coach and recruiter that will help continue the tradition that Coach Matt Woodley and Coach Chris Foster have set in place over the past seven seasons.”

The Bulldogs were 20-11 last season and lost in the first round of the NCAA D-II Tournament. Iowans on the roster include sophomore guards Turner Scott (West Des Moines Valley), Collin Hill (South Hamilton) and Connor Kasperbauer (Ankeny Centennial), senior guards Jack Green (West Des Moines Dowling) and Jake Velky (Waverly-Shell Rock) and sophomore forward Cade McKnight (Grinnell).
