Iowa men's basketball vs. Wisconsin: Final score, stats, highlights

No. 15 Iowa fell to No. 22 Wisconsin 72-66 in the Big Ten men's basketball opener Friday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Hawkeyes (6-1) lost their first game of the season while the Badgers improved to 7-1.

MVP: Point guard D'Mitrick Trice was outstanding for Wisconsin. He made 4 of 8 3-pointers and 7 of 14 shots overall, finishing with a game-high 20 points, plus seven rebounds. His triple with 20 seconds left made it 68-63 and helped the Badgers seal the win at the free-throw line.

For Iowa, Tyler Cook was aggressive all night, starting with a thunderous one-handed slam in the first few minutes of the game. He led the Hawkeyes with 19 points and 15 rebounds.

Turning point: Joe Wieskamp finished a three-point play to give Iowa a 61-60 lead with 3:13 to go, then the Hawkeyes got a steal out of their 1-3-1 trap on the next possession. But Iowa came up empty on its next two trips and Brevin Pritzl made an aggressive defense pay with an open 3-pointer from the wing to put the Badgers up 63-61 with 1:11 to go. They didn't relinquish that lead. Iowa made just one field goal, a Bohannon 3 to cut it to 68-66, in the final three minutes. The Hawkeyes shot 39 percent overall and were just 6 of 24 from deep.

Key stat: 25.0. The Hawkeyes made just a fourth of their 3-point attempts (6 of 24). While Wisconsin wasn't much better at 8-for-24, it was enough to make a difference in a hard-fought game. Iowa came in shooting 33.8 percent from distance as a team.
