Iowa won its first Big Ten men's basketball road game of the season Tuesday night at last-place Northwestern, 75-62.
The Hawkeyes improved to 12-5 overall and 3-3 in the Big Ten. The Wildcats are now 6-10, 1-5.
Box score: Iowa 75, Northwestern 62
Recap: CJ Fredrick and Iowa basketball put best foot forward in win at Northwestern
Turning point: Luka Garza picked up his third foul 22 seconds into the second half and watched the next 7 minutes, 53 seconds from the bench. When he came back, he made an immediate impact with a personal 7-0 run and 14 straight Iowa points in all. A 19-5 Iowa run put the Hawkeyes up 70-51 with 5:01 to go and they cruised from there.
MVP: Like just about every team this season, Northwestern had no answer for Garza. Along with his game-changing run in the second half, the big man scored Iowa's first 10 points of the game, including a pair of 3-pointers. He finished with 27 points on 10-of-14 shooting in just 24 minutes. Oh, and Northwestern posts Jared Jones and Ryan Young both fouled out.
Key stat: 7. With Jordan Bohannon out for the season, Iowa needs other guards to emerge as threats from deep, and they did against Northwestern with seven treys. CJ Fredrick returned from a foot injury and hit 3 of 7 3-pointers, Connor McCaffery hit 2 of 3 and Bakari Evelyn drained 2 of 4. Iowa shot 11 of 22 from deep as a team, a far cry from last Tuesday's 4-of-33 performance in a loss at Nebraska.
