Iowa men's basketball at Minnesota: Box score, highlights, live updates recap

No. 21 Iowa overcame an eight-point deficit, holding Minnesota scoreless over the final 5:25 for a 58-55 win Sunday in Big Ten men's basketball at Williams Arena in Minneapolis, Minn.

The Hawkeyes improved to 18-8 overall and 9-6 in the Big Ten. Minnesota slipped to 12-12, 6-8.

Iowa jumped out to an 8-0 lead and Luka Garza scored the Hawkeyes' first 10 points. But Garza encountered foul trouble and a 6:02 first-half scoring drought allowed Minnesota to take a 31-26 halftime lead.

Iowa didn't lead in the second half until Bakari Evelyn's two free throws with 1:15 remaining. Minnesota's Daniel Oturu missed the front end of a one-and-one with 3.8 seconds left and the Hawkeyes hung on for the win, ending the game on an 11-0 run.

Turning point: Minnesota went on an 8-0 run to go up 55-47 with Garza on the bench with four fouls, but the Hawkeyes fought back when their star came back. Connor McCaffery hit a pair of free throws, Garza scored in the post and hit a 3-pointer and Ryan Kriener made 1 of 2 free throws to tie it at 55 with 1:37 left. Garza rebounded Kriener's missed free throw and Evelyn drew a foul and hit 2 of 2 at the line to give Iowa a 57-55 lead with 1:15 to go. Kriener blocked Marcus Carr's 3-point attempt in the final seconds but Garza fouled Oturu on the ensuing rebound. Oturu missed the front end of a one-and-one, McCaffery made 1 of 2 free throws and Carr's desperation heave at the buzzer was well short.

MVP: Garza battled through foul trouble to put up 24 points on 11-of-21 shooting, eight rebounds, two steals and a block in 28 minutes. Iowa needed all 24 with sharpshooter CJ Fredrick sidelined with an ankle injury and Joe Wieskamp held to two points.

Key stat: 5. Minnesota turned it over five times in the decisive final 5:25 as it was unable to put away what would have been a key win for an NCAA Tournament bubble team. Iowa improved to 2-6 in conference road games with gritty defense down the stretch.
