Susie Weinacht | Iowa House District 73
Our most recent history shows that we are people who can come together when it matters. From the floods of 2008 to the derecho, we are resilient. I’m Susie Weinacht, and I am running to represent District 73 (Marion/Cedar Rapids) in the Iowa House. I have a desire to see our communities succeed!
As a two-term nonpartisan at-large Cedar Rapids City Council member and Mayor Pro Tem, I have served where the rubber meets the road and will bring that experience to Des Moines to be a champion for our communities. This experience taught me that a thoughtfully measured approach is needed to work together for all citizens.
For nearly two decades, I have had the privilege of serving on a variety of statewide, regional, and local boards/commissions, as well as several nonprofit boards/committees. Many of you know me for my work on regional economic growth, workforce readiness, public safety, education, and flood recovery. I have led the effort for a synthetic drug ordinance, which garnered the interest of the White House, created a new revenue stream — without burdening taxpayers — to support Prospect Meadows (a regional economic driver) and my work bringing people together on the Tower Terrace project will bring new opportunities and growth to our communities and region.
As the second largest metro area in the state, we have limited voice in the legislature. To succeed, we will need a seat at the table when decisions about education and economic development policy are made. Investing in education has an impact on Iowa’s economic health and in strengthening our communities. Having served as Executive Director of the Iowa Parent Teacher Association, I have insight into the importance of parental involvement in a quality education. While the dollars we spend are undoubtedly important, parent/guardian engagement is critical to better outcomes. My undergrad concentration focused on child development and my degree is in elementary education with a teaching certification. I understand the vital role of educators, as well as their impact on our children and their future success.
I am passionate about service. I believe that when we work together, we create better communities to live, work, and raise our families. I am running for House District 73 to bring proven leadership, and proven results to the Statehouse. Vote Susie Nov. 8 and together, we will continue to reach higher!
