Several years ago, I worked on a project related to immigration reform. Part of the task was to examine available evidence to determine what Americans considered to be their most important values. The results were not surprising: Individual liberty, the rule of law and voluntary membership in communities were the leaders.
Today, these values are under assault by the very government that was conceived to protect them. Health care mandates, gun control initiatives, NSA spying, expansion of the welfare state and the ever-expanding reach of government are just some of the topics I hear on the campaign trail.
However, the one area that concerns me the most is that the leadership of both political parties seems to want Americans to turn a blind eye to the rule of law. Nowhere is this more evident than in the current discussion about immigration reform.
Without rehashing the myriad faults found in the 'Gang of Eight” immigration reform bill languishing in the House of Representatives, suffice it to say that the legislation is deeply flawed. The worst aspects of the bill are that there are no guarantees of American sovereignty and that there is a definitive path to citizenship for lawbreakers. Citizenship is the most cherished of all aspects of being American. How can we reward lawlessness with this sacred prize when countless millions have come here legally and worked hard to establish themselves as members of the citizenry?
Recently, the CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, supposedly the defender of business in America, expressed that the Republican Party should not field a candidate in the 2016 presidential election cycle if the party would not embrace immigration amnesty. Many prominent leaders of both parties have expressed the same sentiments. Nothing could be more insulting to the American people.
If we are asked to ignore the rule of law on immigration by our business and political leaders, how long will it be before other powerful lobbies ask us to ignore the law on drug trafficking, human trafficking, prostitution and other dehumanizing, socially destructive aspects of the darker side of humanity? We already have an administration that will not defend or enforce the law of the land. How are Americans to defend themselves from these winds of destruction?
As Angelo Codevilla so aptly expressed in 2010, we are being driven to societal deconstruction by the 'Ruling Class” of the land. It is past time when the 'Country Class” found its collective courage and said 'no more.” It's time to send people to Washington who are of the country class and who will not bend to special interests or the power brokers who could care less about what you and I think.
Be wary of candidates who have been endorsed by the amnesty mafia, the drug liberalizers and those who will not defend the cherished values of Americans. Investigate the candidates and vote for those who will defend the nation and the Constitution.
