The price we pay for underfunding Iowa’s schools

As a candidate and a constituent, I was deeply disappointed by Representative Rizer's attempt to justify the underfunding of public education ('Facts about education funding,” April 6). I agree with his statement in the first paragraph, stating, 'the political spin has already begun.” His guest column is a perfect example.
Let's look at the real facts. Since 2010, Supplemental State Aid (SSA) has grown by the following yearly percentages: 2 percent, 0 percent, 2 percent, 2 percent, 4 percent, 1.25 percent, and 2.25 percent. This represents a yearly average of 1.93 percent SSA, even though state revenue has increased during this same time period by an average of 4 percent.
We are already beginning to see the results of the latest round of underfunding. Just recently, in the Cedar Rapids Community School District, 23 teachers lost their jobs. They aren't alone. Districts across the state are being forced to cut positions, increase class sizes, and raise property taxes - thanks to the Iowa Legislature.
As Vice President Joe Biden says, 'Don't tell me what you value. Show me your budget, and I'll tell you what you value.” Based on the past few legislative sessions, it's clear that the Iowa House values big business over public education. How can the legislature, in good conscience, give away $272 million in business tax credits (in FY16 alone) while shortchanging public education? Many times these companies don't even pay Iowa income taxes.
It is imperative that we put a stop to this backward way of governing when we elect our Representatives this November. Let's elect candidates who won't just campaign on making education a priority, but will do so. It is my hope that we can all rally together to elect leaders, at all levels of government, who will put people first.
