Since 2016, a dedicated group of nature enthusiasts and I have worked to restore and protect monarchs and other pollinators through hands-on educational programs. Our mission: To raise awareness about the plight of these essential creatures and the ecosystems they depend on.
Over the years, we’ve expanded our efforts to engage schools, businesses, neighbors, and entire communities, and the support we've received has been overwhelming. That’s why I am excited to announce the launch of a bold new initiative, The Mighty Acorn Society. But what is it, and how did it come to be? Let me share a story of resilience, renewal, and hope.
In August 2020, a fierce storm ripped through Linn County, darkening the skies and devastating the landscape. In a single afternoon, nearly 1 million trees — our longtime guardians — were torn from the earth. For generations, these trees had shaded our homes, supported wildlife, and anchored our land. The damage was staggering, leaving behind broken trunks and shattered branches. But even as we began to repair the visible scars, the storm revealed a more insidious threat: the slow collapse of our native habitats and ecosystems.
This crisis led Monarch Research to take action. We launched an ambitious restoration project to plant 100,000 native trees across Linn County, a goal we proudly reached earlier this year, thanks to the dedication of thousands of volunteers, local businesses, and generous donors. Among those trees, oaks — vital for our land, wildlife, and community — make up nearly half our planting efforts. Once representing 50% of Iowa’s trees, oaks have seen a dramatic decline, putting our ecosystems at risk. To address this, we’ve set a new, even more ambitious goal: plant another 100,000 trees over the next five years, with a special focus on oaks.
Introducing The Mighty Acorn Society.
The Mighty Acorn Society is about more than just planting trees, it's about transformation. Just as a tiny acorn grows into a mighty oak, this society represents a powerful shift in how we connect with nature and nurture life. It's about creating a legacy of beauty and sustainability for future generations. And most importantly, it's about coming together to make a difference, all while having fun. If one small acorn can grow into a towering tree that sustains entire ecosystems for centuries, imagine what a passionate community of people can achieve together.
The Mighty Acorn Society is an exclusive opportunity for just 250 residents of Linn County. No prior experience is required, just a desire to be part of this historic effort and a one-time $5 fee. As a Founding Member, you'll choose from five acorns from native Iowa oak species (Northern Red, Bur, Chinkapin, Swamp White, and Pin), along with air-pruning pots and a custom soil mix — all free of charge. You'll learn how to germinate and nurture these acorns into healthy seedlings, and when they’re ready, you’ll have the option to plant them on your own property or at Monarch Research’s oak savanna. Each year, you'll have the opportunity to invite others to join the Mighty Acorn Society, expanding the impact of this program.
A Grassroots Approach to Change
Unlike other tree-planting initiatives, the Mighty Acorn Society offers an affordable, community-driven model that can be replicated elsewhere to restore biodiversity without financial barriers. Linn County’s unique challenges and successes position us to lead the way in ecological restoration, becoming a national model for grassroots action.
Building a Lasting Legacy Together
Imagine a future where Linn County is full of thriving oak-studded prairies, where tree-lined parks and schools provide shade, butterflies flutter among vibrant wildflowers, and the songs of birds fill the air. This isn’t a distant dream, it’s a future we can create, together. Our impact will go far beyond beautification. Scientific research has proved that planting trees is one of the most effective ways to combat climate change. By joining the Mighty Acorn Society, you’ll be taking tangible steps toward healing the planet. You’re not just planting trees, you're shaping the present, by securing a verdant legacy for generations to come.
