I am seeking re-election to the school board for several reasons. In my previous campaigns for the school board, my motivation stemmed from a belief that I could help others, and many people agreed. This time I'm running because community members believe I can help them, and I agree. I am deeply honored to have the endorsement of the Cedar Rapids Education Association. It will be my privilege to serve this group and the broader community once again.
The Cedar Rapids Community School District (CRCSD) is a large and complex organization. It takes about two years to fully understand its structure and intricacies. I am seasoned and tested, and I am dedicated to continued problem solving. My decision-making process involves evaluating data, asking questions, listening to feedback, and collaborating with others to determine a path forward.
Sound decisions emerge from meaningful conversations, and sometimes from dissent. Dissent is valuable because it allows us to examine an issue from multiple perspectives. Considering different viewpoints is essential to how our community functions and thrives.
The upcoming bond referendum on the Nov. 4 ballot serves as a clear example of how the community and the district have explored issues from various angles. Through conversations and dissent, the plan has been revised to better reflect all stakeholders.
I recognize that discussing the bond issue can be divisive. Despite this, I remain committed to engaging in these challenging conversations. I will continue advocating for updated historic, or new modern facilities, that improve working and learning conditions for everyone. My support extends to students, staff, and parents alike. I join fellow local officials, including my endorsers, in supporting our community’s overall well-being.
As a community, we can re-imagine our path forward—where we are heading and how we plan to get there. Cedar Rapids stands on the brink of becoming an even better place to live, work, and play. Our schools play an integral role in the city’s ongoing evolution.
Students in the Cedar Rapids Community School District are the workforce of tomorrow. America deserves a well-developed, capable workforce, and I will continue to serve the public with a focus on achieving this shared objective.
Thank you for investing in children and for supporting our building staff. Thank you for considering me for your vote. Most importantly, thank you for loving Cedar Rapids as much as I do.
Jennifer Borcherding is a candidate for Cedar Rapids school board District 3.
