Ready to listen, build consensus
Ryan Hall, Iowa City District B
Oct. 28, 2017 8:20 am
My name is Ryan Hall and I wish to be your next Iowa City Council member. I am running because I have witnessed the large wealth and income inequality in our community. As a renter and a working-class student, I understand the struggle for affordable housing. Both students and long-term residents see this as an issue and we must unite these communities to tackle complex issues like housing. If we come together, I believe that we can find solutions to other issues like wages, transportation, local and healthy foods, sustainable development, and more.
As a non-traditional student, I am pursuing a bachelor's degree in environmental planning at the University of Iowa. I previously served in AmeriCorps for three years as a public high school mentor in Columbus, Ohio, a wildland firefighter in Colorado, and a home energy auditor in Decorah. Afterward, I bicycled from the coast of Oregon to Washington, D.C., speaking about climate action throughout this country. My experience in serving others and building bridges between unlikely allies prepares me well for this position on City Council.
If elected, I will bring forth policy and community-based solutions on climate action, continue progress on affordable housing, and build a stronger network of differing sectors of the community. No one elected official has all the answers or solutions. That's why I'm ready to listen to the needs of all members in this community. My goal is to be a council member for all people. I hope for your support Nov. 7.
