YouthPort is celebrating the 24th annual Lights On Afterschool on Oct. 26. Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event that celebrates after school programs and their vital role in the lives of children, families, and communities. The event, organized by the Afterschool Alliance, highlights the many ways that after school programs support students and the need for more quality programs.
Out-of-school time programming is an essential component in the healthy development of today's youth. Such programs provide opportunities for kids to engage in meaningful activities outside of academic settings, and help them build skills that will serve them well throughout their lives.
In extracurricular activities, young people can develop social skills, learn teamwork, and gain self-confidence. These programs also offer a great way to explore new interests and hobbies, which can inspire lifelong passions. Additionally, many after-school programs provide academic support, such as tutoring or homework help.
Out-of-school programs also play an important role in building strong communities. They provide a safe and positive environment for kids to spend their time, which can help reduce crime and other negative outcomes associated with unsupervised youth. Additionally, these programs often involve community members as mentors or volunteers.
In short, out-of-school time programming is an essential component of youth development. It provides young people with opportunities to learn and grow in ways that can have a profound impact on their lives. By investing in these programs, we can help ensure that today's youth have the support and resources they need to thrive.
